When faced with differing opinions, we should try to reach agreement through friendly discussion and reasonable argument. Disagreement is inevitable wherever people think independently, but the way we handle it determines whether it divides us or brings us closer.

A friendly attitude keeps the door of communication open. Once a conversation turns into a quarrel, both sides stop listening and start defending themselves, and even the soundest idea will be rejected simply because of who proposed it. By contrast, when we speak with respect and genuine curiosity, the other party is far more willing to reconsider his or her position. Reasonable argument matters just as much: evidence, logic and concrete examples persuade people, while raising one's voice never does.

I experienced this in a group project last term. My teammates and I disagreed sharply over the research topic, yet instead of insisting on our own preferences, we listed the pros and cons of each proposal and finally settled on a plan better than any single one of them.

In short, patience and reason are the shortest path from disagreement to consensus.
