The chart shows changes in the destinations of undergraduates from a certain university in 2013 and 2018. Compared with 2013, the proportion of graduates choosing employment declined noticeably in 2018, while the percentage pursuing further study rose sharply. The share of those starting their own businesses remained relatively small, with only a slight change.
These changes reflect both social pressure and students’ changing expectations. On the one hand, competition in the job market has encouraged more students to improve their academic qualifications before entering employment. On the other hand, many young people now value long-term development and hope to gain deeper professional knowledge through postgraduate education. Entrepreneurship, however, still requires capital, experience, and risk-taking ability, so it attracts only a limited number of graduates.
In my view, students should make choices according to their abilities and goals. Whether they work, study further, or start a business, careful planning matters most.
