As is clearly shown in the bar chart, a recent survey investigates how parents view the value of outdoor activities for children. Satisfying children's curiosity tops the list at 54.6%, closely followed by sharpening their powers of observation at 54.5%. Physical fitness and stronger parent-child bonds also matter, but are chosen by far fewer respondents — 37.2% and 33.2% respectively.
Two messages can be read into these figures. First, modern parents no longer treat outdoor play merely as exercise; they expect it to nurture inquisitive minds and keen perception that classroom drills cannot easily deliver. Second, while emotional and physical benefits are still valued, they are quietly slipping behind cognitive ones.
In my view, the four functions are equally indispensable. Schools and families should design outdoor programmes that combine free exploration with deliberate companionship, so that curiosity, observation, fitness and family warmth grow together in the open air.
