As is clearly illustrated in the chart, the health literacy level of Chinese residents has experienced a remarkable rise over the past decade, climbing from a mere 8.80% in 2012 to 25.40% in 2021. In other words, nearly three times as many adults now possess the basic knowledge and skills needed to make sound decisions about their own health.

Several factors have contributed to this gratifying upward trend. First, the government has invested heavily in nationwide health-promotion campaigns, ranging from chronic-disease prevention to mental wellbeing. Second, the internet and short-video platforms have made authoritative medical information accessible to virtually every household. Third, the COVID-19 pandemic, however painful, taught ordinary citizens to value scientific knowledge over rumour.

In my view, the figure deserves both applause and reflection. While the improvement is impressive, a literacy rate of merely one in four still leaves vast room for progress. Continued investment in public health education, especially in rural and underdeveloped areas, will be indispensable if we are to build a truly healthy society.
