The chart shows the purposes of mobile-phone reading among students in a certain university. The largest proportion, 59.5 percent, read on their phones to acquire knowledge. A considerable number use mobile reading to obtain information, while smaller shares read mainly for entertainment or other purposes.
This tendency is understandable. With smartphones and digital resources widely available, students can read articles, e-books, news, and course materials almost anywhere. Mobile reading is convenient and efficient, and it helps students make use of fragmented time. However, it may also bring problems, such as shallow reading, distraction, and eye strain, if students rely on it too heavily.
In my view, mobile reading should be used wisely. Students may take advantage of its convenience, but they should also set aside time for deep reading of printed or longer digital texts. Only balanced reading habits can truly improve learning.
