The bar chart clearly illustrates the dramatic change in the urban and rural population of China over the past two decades. In 1990, the urban population stood at approximately 300 million, while the rural population was about 820 million. Over the following 20 years, the urban population experienced a steady increase, reaching roughly 670 million in 2010. Meanwhile, the rural population witnessed an opposite trend, declining to about 670 million as well, making the two figures equal for the first time.

Several factors account for this remarkable transformation. First and foremost, China’s rapid industrialization and urbanization have created enormous job opportunities in cities, attracting millions of rural residents to migrate to urban areas in search of better employment and living conditions. In addition, the government’s urbanization policies have further accelerated this process by improving urban infrastructure and public services.

From my perspective, this trend of urbanization is likely to continue in the foreseeable future. While it brings benefits such as economic growth and improved living standards, it also poses challenges including overcrowding, environmental pressure, and the decline of rural communities. Therefore, the government should strike a balance between urban development and rural revitalization to ensure sustainable and balanced growth for the whole country.
