Agriculture is an important industry in China, with over 300 million practitioners. China's agricultural output ranks first in the world, primarily producing rice, wheat, and legumes. Although China's agricultural land accounts for only ten percent of the world's total, it provides food for twenty percent of the world's population. Rice cultivation in China began in 7700 BC. Long before the use of machinery and fertilizers, hardworking and creative Chinese farmers had already employed a variety of methods to increase crop yields. The latest development in Chinese agriculture is the advancement of organic farming. Organic farming serves multiple purposes, including food safety, public health, and sustainable development.
