Dongting Lake, located in the northeastern part of Hunan Province, is vast but has shallow waters. It serves as a flood storage reservoir for the Yangtze River, with its size largely depending on seasonal changes. The provinces of Hubei and Hunan are named based on their relative positions to the lake, with Hubei meaning 'north of the lake' and Hunan meaning 'south of the lake'. As the birthplace of dragon boat racing, Dongting Lake enjoys a prestigious reputation in Chinese culture. It is said that the dragon boat races originated from the eastern shore of Dongting Lake to search for the body of the patriotic poet Qu Yuan from the Chu state. The dragon boat races and the surrounding beautiful scenery attract tens of thousands of tourists from all over the country and around the world every year.
