The full name of Han Chinese people consists of a surname and a given name. A characteristic of Chinese names is that the surname always comes first, followed by the given name. For thousands of years, the paternal surname has been passed down through generations. However, nowadays, it is not uncommon for children to take their mother's surname. Generally, the given name consists of one or two Chinese characters, often carrying the parents' wishes for their child. From a child's name, one can infer what kind of person the parents hope their child will become or what kind of life they expect them to lead. Parents place great importance on naming their children, as the name often accompanies the child for life.
