Since ancient times, the seal has served in China as proof of identity and a symbol of power. A seal is not merely a practical tool but also a form of art — an ancient craft that combines calligraphy and carving, and is often regarded as an independent art form on a par with painting and calligraphy. From the choice of material and the techniques of production to the design of the script, seals exhibit extremely rich aesthetic expression. While artists in other countries usually sign their names on their paintings, Chinese artists tend to stamp a seal on their paintings and calligraphic works in place of a signature. In this way, the seal becomes part of the work itself and a means of conveying its uniqueness.
